Fast-tracking and extension in RE

The RE department has been teaching GCSE RE in Year 9 since September 2003. Initially, the top set classes sat the Short Course in Year 10 (May 2005) and the Full Course in Year 11 (June 2006). Due to the success of this, the first Year 9 pupils were entered for the Short Course exam in May 2007. In Year 10, they (along with 30 option group pupils) went on to complete the Full Course. The results were excellent. Now, all pupils begin the GCSE in Year 9 and will achieve a Full Course by the end of Year 11.

Currently in Year 11, three fast-track groups are working on an Extended Project Qualification, requiring the independent study which is being demanded by Further and Higher Education Providers. The EPQ is run by AQA and is a compulsory part of the new Diploma. Most of the 56 pupils who have already achieved their GCSE at the end of Year 10 will be entered for a Level 3 qualification, equivalent to an AS Level.

In 2007, top set pupils were selected to opt for an AS Level in RE. Pupils have been studying difficult topics such as Quantum Mechanics and philosophers, such as David Hume and Immanuel Kant. This has stretched those pupils who are gifted and talented in RE and has increased their confidence to excel in other curriculum areas. These pupils will be leaving Highfield fully prepared for the challenges of Further Education.

Change has been challenging but rewarding for both pupils and staff.

Enjoy your weekend and have a drink for Phil (but not Julie!)

Thanks Phil and Julie - I think much of what we come up with on Friday/Saturday will be comming your way on our return.
