Question 5 - What is the best way to deliver PSHE - Student Support within our school?
All staff agreed that current PSHE delivery does need to be addressed. Staff did, however have mixed opinions on how this could be done i.e.:
1. Could PSHE be delivered via lesson content and therefore not be timetabled at all? or
2. PSHE could be coordinated by a leader and taught by staff who want to teach it.
The majority opinion after further discussion was Option 2 to ensure that
- delivery is up to date
- delivery is monitored
- professional guidance can be used
- PSHE is recognised as a subject area in it's own right with the pupils
Quote: “Until the value of it is recognised by staff it will never be taught properly”
Ideas generated:-
- Dedicated team of staff to teach PSHE- staff who want to teach it
- Leader required
- Maximum use of ‘field experts’ for curriculum delivery
- Not to be timetabled using staff ‘spares’
- Staff frees to be used to support delivery team
- Citizenship to continue
- Health mentors to be more involved
- Better staff training and resourcing
- Ensure continuity
- Can qualifications be obtained?
- Can links with college/professionals support delivery
- Does PSHE need to be separate - can it be delivered through other subjects? (consensus was that it does need to be separate)
- 1hr per week in Y7 and part of Su in Y8/9. In KS4 through Asdan/R.E.
- Learning to learn not necessary
Agreed action:-
- Audit staff to find out who would like to teach it
- PEW/REF to test timetable to check capacity available
