PSHE - Student Support
What is the best way to deliver this within our school?
Dedicated team - with Head of Subject? - Music and Art are delivered to ALL Yr 7-9 pupils (1 hour per week) - they also offer a GCSE examination.
So what should we do at Highfield?
Currently - PSHE delivered through Student Support and given to staff at the end of the Timetable.
- Staff often untrained to deliver Sex Ed and Drug Ed
- Low Status due to 'end of timetable staffing
- No KS4 qualification offered
- No KS3 qualification followed

However - move to two dedicated teachers - where would they come from - which department?
So what should we do?

It's either a dedicated team of teachers who want to teach it as PSHE or Student Support etc, or it's embedded into the curriculum taught in conjunction with a curriculum dimension!

After having been in school for a recent SLD, which included subjects covered under PSHE, it became very apparent to me that some staff need training on delivering SRE & drugs & alcohol information. From staff comments I gained an impression that they weren't happy delivering these subjects, probably due to not having enough knowledge on the subject matters. The recent addition of Julie, the health practioner, is a resource we could further use to this end.

We need to give ownership of PSHE to someone who recognises its value and significance to our pupils’ development if our curriculum continues in its present single block form. Alternative, is that it is delivered through a themes approach in developing pupils skills and becomes an aspect on the chosen content being used to develop skills. However, I still believe even in this form someone needs ownership to champion its cause

Head of PSHE needed to get hold of the whole thing. Embed key areas into the curriculum, deliver the rest through SLD's and tutor time.

Train me to do it and I'll adopt it.

Actually, now I think about it... train me and simplify my timetable from the six subjects it has on it at present!
