‘Curriculum Champions’ What an opportunity to bring a truly holistic approach to learning.
“What the teacher is more important than what he teaches” Karl Menniger. The role of the teacher is developing further to that of a facilitator, are we all prepared for this. What support do staff need in fulfilling this role effectively?
We’ve decided as a staff what we want our successful learner to achieved at the end of their five years at Highfield. (Inset Day) I don’t want us to lose sight of this in considering how we respond with new vision for a new curriculum for our pupils.
Whilst we our planning our new curriculum I would like us to find time to ask our pupils what they think.
Chris talked about PLTS (PlaTes, PiLaTes and PeTaLs. The personal learning and thinking skills (pronounced plaits, pelts, and even petals depending on who you are speaking to) are the foundation stone on which the new curriculum should be developed and the consistent theme that blends KS3 and KS4. The PLTs comprise 6 key areas that should be developed throughout and beyond a pupil’s school life:
- Independent Enquires
- Creative Thinkers
- Reflective Learners
- Effective Participators
- Self Managers
- Team Workers
See the QCA site reference given by Chris.
Another interesting place to visit is Teacher TV KS3 New Vision. This gives some insight into how other schools are responding to change demanded by a new curriculum. It also includes examples from two local schools Collegiate and St George’s. Who knows perhaps our ‘Curriculum Champions’ will become famous on screen!
There are many issues to consider so I see the ‘Curriculum Champions’ as the kick off. I hope everyone concerned, plus those who have expressed an interest and are unable to join us, will keep the momentum going on return to school.
