What I want to get out of the residential:
As you know I am an associate staff member. This being so the curriculum is not something that I thought I would
- have any substantial knowledge about or,
- be involved in developing.
This residential, therefore, is a great opportunity for me to do both.
In some ways my involvement has already begun in the shape of supporting PEW with generating the timetable. I have learnt a great deal from PEW and, in example, simply learning how to use the software helped me begin to understand how a school day can be managed and that it does not have to be structured as it is now by default.
Being involved with BSF has also been a great eye opener by being able to see how other schools arrange their day.
Curriculum and timetabling is a very new area for me and I have much to learn, but it will be great to be involved.
Thanks Becky - give me 3 bullet points of things you saw on the visits we did that really stands out in your mind:
I'll start you off with 3 of my own!
- Music change-overs not a loud harsh bell that nearly take your ear drums out!!!! I liked that idea
- I liked the 'landing strip' at Tong
- I was impressed with the look of Salt School - once we found it!

Hi Pete,
Homework already!....My 3 for now are:-
- I loved the ‘Faculty fingers’ at Tong. Tong is built on a 4 finger design and each finger had 3 floors. Each floor is designed with general classrooms, flexible classrooms, staff work area, toilet and flexible ‘out of class’ space. Pupils enter the fingers via a central space and have no need to walk past during lesson times, particularly as they have toilets available. The design allowed for flexible working in both curriculum delivery and timing. I really hope we can go back for a visit to see how it is working now the staff and pupils are working in this design.
- I liked the idea of vertical tutoring which we saw in both Tong and David Young Academy. I could see the benefits of having mixed years/ siblings together for pastoral work but also for the pupils socially.
- Finally, I was also impressed with the lack of movement bell at David Young, but coupled with that the fact that an extra 5 mins was actually built in to the timetable for this movement. This meant teaching staff were more likely to actually get their full quota of time for teaching.
